Traditionally, the guests presence has always been requested using white, off-white, cream, or pastel stationery. These days, however, party consultants and printing presses are offering a long list of other colors to choose from. On display in their offices are lime, orange, olive, tangerine, blue, brown, burgundy, ruby, and maroon samples.

Perhaps the Americans' exposure to other cultures have helped open the way to the acceptance of other colors. The western bride, for instance, always came all dressed in white. For Asians, particularly the Chinese, white is the color of mourning. So if you are marrying someone of Chinese parentage, your future spouse's parents might object to all-white stationery and bridal entourage. They might, instead, insist on the lucky colors of their own culture. You will have no choice but to compromise.

And if you did not follow the all-white rule, neither will your brother, or sister, or friends.
